Kings on NBC – Phy’s mini-review

Filed Under (Writing Stuff) by Phy on 16-03-2009

It was supposed to be an updated retelling of the David / Saul / Jonathan tale, but if so, they really missed the mark.

Other than having a character named David Shepherd, and a token lipservice to God, this is a completely different story that takes classic elements and then makes them unrecognizable.

The first hour was fine. However, the second hour took a dark turn. Jonathan is privately gay and hates David for saving him? David lied about what happened with Goliath? His most heroic act is in surrendering? And his encounter with Goliath took place under cover of night, and was a front for a rescue operation instead of a bold challenge invoking the name and power and sovereignty of God?

If they were pandering to any specific group with this project, it /wasn’t/ Christians. Yes, the Reverend appears to be a Samuel-like character, but he’s on-screen for about five minutes out of two hours, not enough to make up for a completely revisionist story.

I had high hopes for this one, but, alas, this retelling only shows how far people will go to distort a classic tale of victory in trusting in God / defeat in trusting self to a soap opera with tanks.
